Questions

Chapter 2

When is Wilson going to find out about his wife and Tom? How is he going to react?

"Wilson, he thinks she goes to see her sister in New York. He's so dumb he doesn't know he's alive." Pg 26

I think you can only keep a lie for so long until it comes out. Mr. Wilson will find out eventually but I don't think he's going to flip out because he seems like too nice of a guy.

Do these background characters like Mr/Mrs. Mckee, Catherine and Dr. Eckleburg have any relevance?

"Just as Tom and Myrtle reappeared, company commenced to arrive at the apartment door." Pg 30

I believe all of these characters will come up later in the book for a little bit, but not have a big significance.

Is there a reason to be scared of Gatsby?

"I'm scared of him. I'd hate to have him get anything on me." Pg 32

I think we're going to learn more and more about Gatsby's past and eventually it's going to come out that he's killed a man or something along the lines. The only rumors about this guy are bad ones.

Chapter 3

What was holding back Gatsby from contacting Nick?

"He had seen me several times, and had intended to call on me long before, but a peculiar combination of circumstances had prevented it." Pg 41

Maybe Gatsby is a wanted felon and is hiding from the police. Maybe he's just weird.

Will Nick judge Gatsby after all the rumors he hears?

"Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once." Pg 44

I'm going to take Nick as an honest man. He said he was raised to not judge people so I think he will get to know Gatsby before making any conclusions on him.

I'm not sure if this is just me, but isn't there less privacy at large parties?

"And I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there isn't any privacy." Pg 49

At large parties there's more people to bother you. With small parties you find a couple people and talk to them for most of the night, more intimate.

Chapter 4

What's the relationship between Jordan Baker and Gatsby?

"Do you mean you're in love with Miss Baker?"
"No, old sport, I'm not. But Miss Baker has kindly consented to speak to you about this matter." Pg 67

Jordan and Gatsby seem to talk a lot, however Gatsby seems to be using her to get to Nick. Gatsby wants Nick for something, I'm thinking it has to do with helping change Gatsby's image.

What is a business gonnegtion?

"I understand you're looking for a business gonnegtion." Pg 70

Maybe like a right hand man. Does the dirty work.

What does the letter Daisy get on her wedding day say?

"She wouldn't let go of the letter. She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow." Pg 76

The letter must be from Gatsby or be about Gatsby. Maybe he died in war or he was writing her saying that he was coming back for her.

Chapter 5

What kind of work does Gatsby offer Nick?

"Well, this would interest you. It wouldn't take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money. It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing." Pg 83

Im guessing it has something to do with that gonnegtion Wolfsheim mentioned. Right hand man that does the dirty work.

Is there really a big difference between a serf and a peasant?

"Americans, while occasionally willing to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry." Pg 88

I really have no idea what's the difference.

What's the big deal with the shirts?

"It makes me sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts before." Pg 92

I'm not sure what this girl's crying for. Maybe she realized all the luxury she missed out on by not being with Gatsby.

Chapter 6

Is Gatsby going to ask Daisy to tell Tom she doesn't love him? Will she do it?

"He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: I never loved you." Pg 109

I think Daisy will do it if Gatsby asks. She's obviously in love with Gatsby still and if she's willing to cheat on her husband with him, she might as well just leave him and run to Louisville with big Gatz.

What does Nick almost remember at the end of the chapter?

" Through all he said, even through his appalling sentimentality, I was reminded of something - an elusive rhyme, a fragment of lost words, that I had heard somewhere a long time ago." Pg 111

Noooo idea.

Is Gatsby and Daisy ever going to be anything more than a kiss?

"So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her." Pg 112

Sounds like the perfect kiss. Just by the way that their first kiss was described, I think there is much more love to come and Daisy's going to run away in lust with Gatsby.

Chapter 7

What's Toms next move after he finds out Daisy loves Gatsby?

"She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw." Pg 119

I think Tom's going to keep quiet until he can talk to Daisy alone and get her in check. He has control over her and he knows that so he's not going to worry about it too much.

What's Gatsby still doing chasing Daisy if he knows she's a woman that's all about the money?

"Her voice is full of money," he said suddenly. Pg 120

Gatsby's a lost cause. I think he's just lonely and wants a companion and Daisy is the closest thing to a girl that he has so he's chasing her down no matter what it takes.

Who's Daisy going to choose?

"I did love him once, but I loved you too." Pg 132

Now we have a sticky situation here. The triangle must be broken up and I think Tom is going to get the boot.

Chapter 8

Is Gatsby really going to stay in town and wait for Daisy to make a decision when people think he ran over Myrtle?

"He couldn't possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do. He was clutching at some last hope and I couldn't bear to shake him free." Pg 148

I think Gatsby's going to end up staying in town waiting around for Daisy and is going to get caught by the police. When he goes to jail Daisy is going to have no choice but to go with Tom and it will have all been for nothing

Will Gatsby realize he's lost Daisy and move on? Maybe find another nice girl?

"She was the first "nice" girl he had ever known." Pg 148

I think it would be a nice ending if Gatsby stumbled upon another sweet girl at his house and took her to Louisville instead. Forget Daisy.

Is Gatsby going to kill himself?

"I can't describe to you how surprised I was to find out I loved her, old sport. I even hoped for awhile that she'd throw me over, but she didn't, because she was in love with me too." Pg 150

I think it's definitely a possibility. The man is obviously heart broken and now he's gotten his wish and Daisy has thrown him over, so now what's he going to do?

Chapter 9

Will Daisy show to Gatsby's funeral?

"But she and Tom had gone early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them." Pg 164

I think she will. She's going to hear about it through people talking and is going to show up saying she always loved him.

Is this a legit quote? I really like it

"Let us learn to show friendship for a man when he is alive and not after he is dead." Pg 172

I think it's legit because people always say I wish I could've done this or that differently, the fact is life is precious and we need to enjoy the time we have. Why wait?

What's the meaning behind this finishing sentence?

"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

Only Mr. Sullivan knows
